Fate...and other drugs

Is a chance encounter just that?  Or is it as many would have you believe. . .fate or some sort of divine intervention?

This topic is on my mind today because of a chance encounter I had this weekend.  I was out and about with friends, in a place I never got & I ran into an old flame.  We chatted a bit and exchanged numbers and texted back and forth the next day.  It was really nice seeing him & catching up.  In the midst of our conversation he  brought up the idea of fate.  Like it had to be meant to be for us to run into each other after all these years, in a place I never go.

I'm not sure what I think about that idea.  Fate is one of those things I've never been so sure of.  I feel like when we attribute too much to the idea of fate, we take away personal responsibility. . .we ignore the role our choices make in everything. I'd like to think that it was just coincidence (chance) that we both made decisions that brought us to the same place that night.

I'm not even sure why I'm thinking so much about this. . .sometimes my brain is going 100000 miles a minute.

Anyway. . .what say you. . .do you believe in fate?  Why or why not?

Sound off. . .

  1. It all depends on the situation. I wouldn't say "I was destined to fail" if you had opportunities to rise up and succeed. On the other hand, fate can determine relationships. For instance, you might have been destined to marry your childhood friend. I don't know; fate is something you can't just throw around.

  2. But if you are destined to marry your childhood friend, does that mean it will happen no matter what choices you make along the way? If it is fate or destiny, do our life decisions play any role in that??
